Why I chose this book: I chose this book because it was recommended to me several times in the past. When I opened up the book to the first page, the first paragraph had me hooked. I also chose this book, because i love guessing, mystery type of books. Genre(s): This book falls under many different genres, such as mystery, science fiction, adolescence fiction, fantasy, romance, and thriller. It fits into the mystery genre, because there is a problem that remains a mystery throughout the book that cannot be comprehended. As you read the book, an idea will come across where you know something is being hidden or kept a secret. There is a question unanswered that the main character is determined to discover. This book has an unrealistic idea, which make it also fall under the genre science fiction. Basically science fiction is a genre dealing with fiction of futuristic science of imagination. This is where the genre of fantasy comes in. Fantasy is the power of imagination or an impractical idea. Understanding this book is quite difficult, due to the colossal amount of twists and turns. It has a paranormal sense throughout the book also. The characters are mainly teenagers in high school, meaning another this book is categorized is adolescence fiction. Since the characters are in high school, of course romance is involved. Romance is focused on love and relationships in between two people who care deeply for each other. In this case, two characters fall deeper and deeper into each other as they get to know one another. Last but not least, another genre is thriller, because of the excitement in the plot. Altogether, this book falls under many genres due to the plot of the storyline. Section of the summary of the plot: Olivia Corbette returns for another year of high school, but this year she is different and has completely changed. The year before she was popular and had everything going for her. Until her dad left, and for that she blames herself and isolates herself from the rest of her school except her bestfriend Ami. Note that she is on medication due to her sketchy past. This year she is quiet, and stays away from these people she labels as 'wonks'. Everyone is gossiping about a new girl named Miranda Vaile. Why? Because there are only two things everyone knows about her. One, her parents are dead. Two, she killed them. (First paragraph of the book.) People stayed clear from her the first few days, until the most popular girl named Katie got in trouble with the teacher. Miranda had stood up for her. Katie became friends with Miranda, actually she became best friends with Miranda. Throughout the school year, they became the it girls, the ones to be around. Olivia stayed clear from both, but then she began to notice Katie's health slowly dying down while Miranda is looking better every day. Being curious and unwarily, she looks up on the internet what she knows. A website pops up on the screen suggesting she is a shape shifter. A shape shifter is someone who latches themselves onto someone else to drain or suck the life out of them. Of course Olivia knew how crazy she sounded even considering the idea so she disregarded it, but it still stuck in the back of her mind throughout her investigation. In the hospital, doctors say that she is aneroxic, but Olivia knew the real truth. When she finally explained what she thought to her therapist, they only accused Olivia of her medication not working because of the words coming out of her mouth. People thought she was crazy, and no one understood but herself. Things were not looking good for her, especially when she found out her bestfriend Ami was only her imagine. Katie eventually dies, and Miranda decides to latch on to Olivia. Olivia slowly falls into her trap, but there is someone looking out for her. His name is Lachlan, and he has a crush on Olivia. Lachlan tells Olivia that Miranda is changing her into something he never thought she would become. He saves her from a disaster waiting to explode. Miranda one night tries to commit suicide with Olivia, but Olivia is opposed to the idea. Lucky for her, Lachlan shows up just in time to save her. The one thing that everyone wonders about is where Miranda went. After the incident, she disappeared. Olivia looked her up on the internet to see where she went, but everything was blank. Characters:Olivia Corbette (Olive): Olivia Corbette had it all, friends, popularity, until her world came crashing down when her father left and Olivia blames herself. When she hears about the new girl, on page 1 she says, "Personally, I can not wait to meet the new girl, she sounds interesting." Olive is the type of girl to stay away from trouble and her old life. Everyday she takes her meds, follows directions, and only associates with her imaginary best friend Ami, who calms to look just like her except with better features. Olivia connects with Ami, because Ami went through the same thing as Olive, so she has someone to talk to about her personal life. Just like every other teenager, she has a job. She works at a movie theater. Olivia has a younger brother and her mother, these two make up her family, because her father left when Olivia was suffering with physological problems. Throughout the book, she manages to pull through. Olivia seems to be the only one to notice something wrong with the new girl and investigates the situation on her own. Katie: Katie is Olivia's ex best friend, and the most popular girl in the school. Katie and Olivia were once so close, almost like sisters, roaming the halls with the popular group, but this year everything is different. Everything goes her way. Throughout the book she is the victim of Miranda Vaile, and Oliva tries to look out for her although Katie despises her. She gets every guy she wants and does anything she wants. Presenting herself to be shallow and mean, she is never underestimated, but deep down she can be very caring and nice. On page 9, Katie says, "Go on then, but don't forget, once you're a road accident, that's it. No going back." to Olivia, her once, use to be best friend. Until her death, Olive looks out for her and tries to unfold Miranda's real identity and what her intentions really are. Lachlan: Lachlan is a competitive swimmer, and the popular girls try to take him when they realize he shows intrest in Olive. Of course Olivia is paranoid and believes that he is only mocking her and making fun of her when he tries to find a way into her life. Lachlan shows emotion towards her and she immediately locks him out of her life. When he finally admitts to her that he is interested, she explains to him how they are both different people and they do not belong together. Even though she expresses different feelings towards him, he never stops trying. A the end of the book, Olive falls in love with him when he helps her get out of a hole that she could not get out off. He saved her life from Miranda and looked out for her. Big Idea: Miranda Vaile, the new girl, leaves Olive pondering on what her intentions are by hurting her ex best friend Katie. Everyday Miranda becomes prettier, and prettier while Katie just withers away like nothing. This gives Olive the idea that Miranda is a 'shape shifter'. Keep in mind that Olive does have mental problems, and takes medication due to her past. So when she discusses what she thinks about Miranda to her therapist/doctor, she acusses her of being crazy and puts her on a different medication. When she confronts Miranda about what she is, Miranda turns the situation around to her. Miranda also acusses Olive of being crazy, saying her past is getting to her and making her see things. People start to believe that Olive cannot determine what is reality and what is her imagination. Olive disregards what others say, and focuses on revealing Miranda's true self. When Katie passes away, because Miranda has drained her completely, this makes Olive step up more. She becomes friends with Miranda and begins to bond with her. This is where Lachlan steps in, because Olive forgets what her real intentions are. Miranda blinds Olive from the truth by taking her to giggs of her favorite bands, helping her meet her first famous celeberities, and getting into places without IDs. Lachlan makes sure that Olive returns home without seeing Miranda or associating with her, but one day things took a bad turn. Major problem in the book: A major problem in the book is that Olive can not determine what is reality and what is her imagination. In her past, she suffered with many problems and tried to end everything by committing suicide. When she is in the mental institute, she waits everyday for her father to show up, but she gets nothing but disappointment. After she gets discharged from the institute, she receives the news that her father left the family and this makes her go into a state of depression. Taking her medication, things do not get better, but everyday she manages to pull through. For a while, she wonders if anything thats been going on is real. For an example, she has an imaginary friend named Ami, who she believes is real. When she discovers that she is not real and only apart of her imagination, she finds herself to be on her own. Not being able to distinguish what is real and what is not real, she struggles with being comfortable with herself. I believe the major conflict in this book is Olive trying to fight her own problems. Dealing with her own battles puts a lot on her plate. Not knowing what Miranda really is, at one point she asks herself if what she is acusing Miranda of is only her imagination or reality. Olivia Corbette claims that she is everything, but crazy. Image: For my symbolic image I used a picture of me and Samantha Franklin. This is best friend and cousin Samantha Franklin, I think our relationship reflects Ami and Olivia's relationship. Samantha resembles Ami a lot in this book, by being there for her best friend. They're so close and alike, just like me and Samantha. Ami helps Olivia whenever she needs something, and that is what Samantha does for me. The only difference is that Ami is imaginary in this book, and Samantha is not. Ami and Olivia are both in high school, and so are me and Samantha.
Five Words: 1) Confectionery: This word appeared on page 54, "It's amazing the amount of poor-quality confectionery that people will buy when they're on a date." My definition: Something able to be bought, something that can be used for a present. Definition: The skill, technique of making candy. 2) Unearthed: This word appeared on page 29, "He'd lift up the things he unearthed along the way-buckets, shoes-pretending they were treasures." My definition: Something unusual. Definition: To bring osmething up out of the ground. 3) Haughtiness: This word appeared on page 36, "I summoned up the haughtiness of a queen." My definition: Something that describes an image of something. Definition: Condescending, behaving in a superior, arrogant way. 4) Deliberate: This word appeared on page 52, "Maybe it was subconsciously deliberate." My definition: Someone being full of it. Definition: Intentional, carefully thought out. 5) Groped: This word appeared on page 260, "I groped around, trying to think of the way she described it." My definition: Attach, think of. Definition: Search by feeling, search for something blindley. Existing works: This book reminds me of the movie 'Shapeshifter', because of Olivia's crazy idea about Miranda being a shapeshifter. The movie is about a boy lurking through different towns, and latching onto different people draining their looks and personality. This reminds me of Miranda draining Katie of her personality and looks. Basically, this book reminds me of all different types of sci-fiction shape shifter movies. This book also reminds me of the Black Swan, because the girl in the Black Swan has problems and issues with herself, trying to achieve perfection. The Black Swan is about a woman trying to achieve perfection, but struggles with herself. In Shift, Olivia has troubles with herself, and issues with herself just like the main character from the Black Swan. At the end of the movie, the main character from the Black Swan ends up dying, just like how Katie dies in the book. The romance part of this book reminds me of the Hunger Games, because in the HUnger Games Peeta is inlove with Katniss, and tries to find a way into her life. In the book Shift, Lachlan tries to find a way into Olivia's life, because he has feelings for her just as Peeta did for Katniss. At the end of the movie, Katniss lets Peeta in and they both end up liking each other and sharing feelings with one another. At the end of the book in Shift, Olivia lets Lachlan come into her life, and when they share a kiss, she falls for him. Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11378659-shift
